Since March, the Rev. Steven Barnes has been leading the congregation of Oconee Presbyterian Church through virtual worship service. Barnes succeeded former pastor Joel Tolbert. Barnes intends to serve OPC for just a couple of years. With the aid of additional training, he will help the church leaders and members envision and prepare for the church’s future.

Barnes lives with his wife and children in Suwanee. He earned a master’s degree in theology and has led churches in positions such as youth director, associate pastor and senior pastor.

“This has certainly been the most unique start of any church I’ve ever been at,” he said. “It’s only been just within the last two weeks that I’ve met people face-to-face.”

He has been met with members through pavilion meetings behind the main church building or lunches sitting six feet apart in people’s backyards.
