A staple of Watkinsville for 59 years, Oconee State Bank has expanded a number of times but has never forgotten its roots.

Its Watkinsville branch is known not just for its customer service but for its grassy hilltop, where cannons blast on Constitution Day and Christmas lights sparkle at the annual Tree Lighting.

It is this knoll where Oconee State Bank President Neil Stevens hopes to locate the company’s headquarters. Although not yet on the market, the goal is to sell the H. Mell Wells Operations Center off of Macon Highway.

Workers have already examined some of the trees on the hill, and employees were informed of this goal last Friday. However, Stevens explained that this vision is far from a reality.

“There are so many different snags and roadblocks that could occur,” he said. “We are not that far along. Even if it’s worked out, we will not break ground until December.”

Stevens said plans should be more concrete by late August.
