Less than three months after the Board of Commissioners approved a 200-room hotel where U.S. 78 intersects with Mars Hill Road, a different developer is seeking a rezone to allow for a much smaller “boutique” hotel on the opposite end of the highway, near its junction with Hog Mountain Road and across from the forthcoming subdivision Westland.
Currently, SpringHill Suites, built 10 years ago at the Oconee Connector, is the only hotel in Oconee. Another hotel is planned just behind SpringHill Suites, but construction has not yet begun. Watkinsville has the Luxury Inn motel, individual houses listed on Airbnb and, until this summer, Ashford Manor Bed & Breakfast.
JDG Investments LLC will petition the Oconee County Planning Commission on Monday for a zoning change from agriculture to business zoning in order to allow for a two-story, 30-room hotel; a farm-to-table restaurant and several specialty shops.
The retail component will be 8,000 square feet, with the restaurant totaling 3,000 square feet.
Once the Planning Commission gives its recommendation, the BOC will vote on the rezone at its Aug. 6 meeting.
