It was inevitable for the construction of a roundabout about a quarter mile from two schools to overlap with the start of the school year.
At a Town Hall last Thursday at the Oconee County Civic Center, Board of Commissioners Chairman John Daniell said that no contractor could guarantee work on the roundabout at the intersection of Mars Hill and Malcom Bridge roads ending within 60 days.
Construction on the round about will start Aug. 12 with a projected completion date by Oct. 31. There will be intermittent lane closures during that time and minor delays.
Daniell said the contractor, E.R. Snell, which had the chosen bid of around $1.25 million, has worked around schools and is aware of school operating hours. Lane closures will be infrequent, he said, but when a significant lane closure occurs, it will be posted on the county’s Facebook page, “Oconee County GA Government” ahead of time. Daniell added that there may be some construction on Saturdays as well.
