After more than a year of opposition from numerous Bishop residents and the University of Georgia Athletic Department, the Georgia Department of Transportation has decided not to construct a truck bypass through Bishop in the near future. That project will now be categorized under “long-range” funding with no specified date for construction.
“Due to the lack of public consensus for the proposed alignment within Bishop, GDOT will not move forward with the localized bypass alignment,” stated U.S. 441 Project Manager Bruce Anderson.
GDOT will still widen U.S. 441 from Madison to Bishop, stopping at Astondale Road. The downtown retail district will remain as it is.
The four-laning for the highway south of Bishop is expected to be let in May 2023.
