Families concerned about looming meal balances from last school year need not worry.

The Christian Men’s Fellowship at Watkinsville First Christian Church donated funds to clear unpaid student lunch balances from Oconee County Schools’ 2018-2019 school year.

This group raised the funds necessary for the effort through the church’s annual Chicken Mull event in December.

In other news, Dr. Claire Buck, chief academic officer, was honored last week with the Dr. Jimmy Stokes GAEL Service Award from the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders. This award is given to individuals who provide longtime, outstanding service to GAEL and its affiliate organizations.

The operations department now has a new head after Jake Grant retired at the end of last year. Kevin Hill has been installed as the new Director of Facilities.

In similar news, Chief Operations Officer Brock Toole gave board members an update about two of the Malcom Bridge Road roundabouts at Monday’s BOE meeting.

Oconee County will not pursue a roundabout initially planned for the Malcom Bridge Middle School parent entrance.

Plans are still on track for a roundabout at the adjacent bus and staff entrance. Before construction on that roundabout can commerce, Toole explained that a force main will have to be reworked and upgraded so that the main does not go through where the roundabout’s right of way currently is.

As well, the district is planning to update the lighting at North Oconee High School's baseball, football, softball and soccer fields to better LED lighting, similar to what's already in place at Oconee County High School, said Toole.

OCS is currently seeking bids for the project. Bids are due to the district office by Feb. 28 at 3 p.m.
