When a candidate is elected to office, that person’s campaign slogan becomes a promise.

That’s how Watkinsville Mayor Bob Smith, who will be sworn in this month, feels about his catchphrase “Watkinsville First.”

Smith envisions volunteer ambassadors for the city who visit local businesses and relay their needs or concerns to the city administration and council.

His first question to business owners is, “What can Watkinsville do for you?”

And his first question to his fellow elected officials is, “How can we take government spending down for a town of 2,800 people?”
