After a career in Athens-Clarke County, Mike Hunsinger wants to serve his fellow neighbors here in Oconee County.

The deputy chief of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department has announced his candidacy for Oconee County Probate Court judge. He will be running against Lt. George Roberts, the Oconee Courthouse security supervisor, and Cpt. Jimmy Williams, the communications chief for E-911 in Oconee.

Because the judgeship is nonpartisan, the outcome of the race will be determined in the May 19, 2020 general primary, or a runoff shortly thereafter.

“I’ve been in service my entire life,” said Hunsinger. “I want to continue that service outside of my current profession of law enforcement.”

Hunsinger, who holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Georgia and a master of public administration from Columbus State University, is a 32-year veteran officer.

He began his career as a patrolman with the University of Georgia Police Department in 1987. A year later, he went to work for the Athens-Clarke County Police Department. There, he was a patrolman, detective for the drug and vice unit, detective for the financial investigations unit, sergeant for the uniform division special operations unit and sergeant and commander for the drug and vice unit.

In 2002, Hunsinger became a lieutenant and was tasked with managing the drug and vice unit and then five organized crime drug enforcement task forces with the Drug Enforcement Administration. From 2012 to 2015, Hunsinger was a major with the Athens-Clarke Police Department before assuming the role of captain and then interim chief in 2018.

His tenure as deputy police chief began in February of this year.
