A portion of Malcom Bridge Road from the 2400 block to its junction with Mars Hill Road is closed through July 31 for the construction of a roundabout at the bus and staff entrance to Malcom Bridge Elementary and Middle schools.
Board of Commissioners Chairman John Daniell said the county’s goal is to increase safety and functionality of roadways, prepare for future traffic demands and remove deputies from having to direct traffic.
Roundabouts improve safety and reduce congestion, he said. In 2019, the BOC finished Oconee County’s first roundabout at the intersection of Mars Hill and Malcom Bridge roads.
“I think that’s the best solution,” said Rodney Jones, developer of forthcoming shopping center The Village at Malcom Bridge, which will include eight to ten buildings at the intersection of Malcom Bridge and Lenru Roads.
Because the Board of Education refused to cooperate with the BOC on previous plans to build a roundabout at the parent entrance to Malcom Bridge Middle School, a second roundabout has been scrapped in favor of a right-turn lane at the middle school parent entrance.
