Oconee State Bank will celebrate its 60th birthday next year with some shovels and hard hats.

The Watkinsville bank hopes to break ground on a new headquarters adjacent to its Watkinsville branch in April, said President Neil Stevens.

Last Wednesday, the Watkinsville City Council looked at conceptual plans for the two-story building that will be built on the hill facing the intersection of Experiment Station Road and North Main Street.

Oconee State Bank’s H. Mell Wells Operations Center off Macon Highway will be sold to Watkinsville resident Dave Mulkey, who plans convert the building into a mixed-use space similar to the Bottleworks in Athens or Westside Provisions in Atlanta.

“It will have a mix of entertainment, restaurants, office space and small boutique shops,” he said. “It will also have a big open area of seating shared by restaurants.”
