A North Oconee High School football helmet lay next to Kumar Rocker’s bed well into the 2016 football season.

Rocker, the son of former All-American defensive tackle and former University of Georgia defensive line coach Tracy Rocker, decided before his junior year to focus on baseball, however, after being a defensive end.

Football had been a big part of Rocker’s life, because like his father the sport burns in his blood. During the first few weeks after his decision to step away from the gridiron, Rocker seemed to fight the urge to let it go completely. He held onto his helmet until he was asked to turn it in.

“He was trying to figure out what he would do during his down time,” Tracy said. “A North Oconee helmet was right next to his bed for the whole season, until they told him ‘hey you need to bring the helmet back on over.’ But it’s in him naturally. He’s played football and he’s been in a football locker room the majority of his time with me. He still likes football and I think its just part of him.”

A decision had to be made.
