Sophomore Gavin Jones won the 50-yard and the 100-yard freestyle as NOHS won their sixth straight Clarke-Oconee Area Meet.

North Oconee High School sophomore Gavin Jones made a commitment to swimming as a 7-year-old. Jones had been swimming since he was 5-years-old, but after a few years of doing the local summer swimming league he wanted more.

Today, not only does Jones swim for the Titan Tide, but he also is a member of the Athens Bulldog Swim Club. To anyone keeping score that means a lot of swimming practice and swim meets between two different programs. Jones loves it. There isn’t a dull moment when it comes to jumping in the pool and competing against teammates or against swimmers from other teams.

“I’m really lucky to be able to jump in the water everyday especially at the nice pool that we train at,” Jones said. “I’m really fortunate being one of those people that does know how to swim and does it competitively. I think it’s really cool especially when it’s an Olympic year. Olympic years really get swimming out as a sport to a bunch of different people. I think it’s good for everybody to swim.”

For Jones, the process leading to meet day is the fascinating part of competitive swimming. Jones has always believed in hard work, so he’s always looking for ways to improve in the sport he loves. Jones doesn’t play any other sports because he wants his focus to be 100 percent focused on being the best swimmer he can be.

“I think hard work is always been something that I’ve always tried to work towards,” Jones said. “Coming to practice is half of the battle. When you’re in practice you always want to try and race your teammates and try and touch the wall before them. That kind of work ethic will translate to the pool.”

For Jones and the Titan Tide, all his hard work turned into two wins on Friday night. Jones won the 50-yard in 22.69 seconds and the 100-yard freestyle (49.39) as NOHS won their sixth straight Clarke-Oconee Area Meet.

Jones’ performance has made him this week’s Oconee Physical Therapy & Sports Rehabilitation/Oconee Enterprise Athlete of the Week.
