Following a Marsy’s Law violation hearing in November, Western Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge Eric Norris found that in several examples, Gonzalez did, in fact, infringe on the rights of a victim.
On Oct. 2, 2023, Gonazles dismissed charges against defendant Carlos Alberto Mejia of Athens, who, in August 2022, allegedly drove drunk and struck another vehicle at the intersection of Ga. 316 and the Oconee Connector. Due to the impact of the crash, the victim’s car was pushed 30 to 40 yards into oncoming traffic. Mejia then fled the scene and was arrested 40 minutes later with open containers found in his vehicle.
The victim is being represented by Watkinsville attorney Kevin Epps, who has filed multiple legal challenges against the DA’s Office this year. The victim claims her constitutional and statutory rights under the Georgia Crime Victims Bill of Rights were violated.
